STATE OF THE ART UPDATE FOR NON-PROFESSIONALS
At our January 2003 patient seminar, Dr. Pacifico indicated that interventions to
lower serum cholesterol such as diet and drug therapy (statins) might help to reduce
the risk of Alzheimer's dementia. Questions were raised regarding structural
changes in the brain accounting for the disease and mechanisms by which elevated
blood cholesterol might invite dementia. Here, we provide an update on
Alzheimer's disease with a special focus on these questions.
