Lifestyle-dependent support
Several retrospective and observational studies suggest that aging persons
remaining mentally active (maintaining cognitive activities) have a decreased risk
of developing senile dementia (this subject recently reviewed in Mayo Clinical
Proceedings 2002; vol. 77, pages 681-696). If you retire, don't simply go
fishing, go thinking.
Conclusion
Alzheimer research has made spectacular advances in recent years. There is a
realistic prospect that this tragic illness, an increasing worldwide health
problem, will be amenable to effective prevention and treatment.
